Beginner move → “I’ll message the recruiter!”

Advanced move → “I’ll message the recruiter and few other members of the company!”

All-Star move → “I’ll establish my personal brand and give to my network through sharing my knowledge. I’ll engage with my network’s content and profiles and finding ways to give to them. Then I’ll message from a place of mutual giving and wanting to build a relationship.”

It can feel tempting to message the ‘Hiring Team’ on that job posting you see on LinkedIn.

But guess what?

So is everyone else who’s applying to that job.

Messages like:

“Hi! I applied to this job and I’m really excited. When would you have some time to chat about my profile?”

This type of messages ❌

No one has time.

Aside from the receiver of this message (usually recruiters) not having the time to entertain everyone that messages them this

It’s also void of a relationship.

You don’t stand out.

And beyond sending a message, you give no real reason why someone should respond to you.

The more effective approach?

→ Become clear on who/how you want to help
→ Invest in your personal brand on LinkedIn
→ Optimize your profile so people know
→ Create content to give a taste of your work
→ Apply to great-fit jobs (not just average)
→ Engage with people/company content
→ Continue to engage and build relationships
→ Reach out to the relationships you’ve built

While this doesn’t guarantee a response

You dramatically increase your chances of hearing back.

Focusing on relationships > applications

Is a lot of work

But you also go much further in your career.

The best part?

The longer you do it, the more benefit you reap.

(i.e. I’m a message away from my next job now)
